Maths Intent
At Lark Rise Academy, we follow a Maths Mastery approach to enable children to develop a deep understanding of Maths. We aim to equip children with mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to enjoy and use these skills throughout their time in our school and beyond.Teachers ensure that declarative (facts), procedural (method) and conditional knowledge (problem solving) is taught and developed throughout the maths curriculum. We challenge pupils to talk, think and solve problems; developing a sense of curiosity about the subject with a clear understanding.
The teaching of mathematics follows a clearly mapped curriculum where progression of skills and knowledge is evident and referenced to government curriculum guidance. However, the mathematics curriculum goes far beyond what is taught in maths lessons. We encourage children to make links to real life through their maths learning and ensure we enrich their learning of mathematics at every available opportunity.
Teachers use the ‘Ready to Progress’ criteria for each year group to ensure children are confident and secure in each area before they move on to the next step. This ensures sound, confident knowledge is secured. This also ensures that targeted support can be provided to those children who need extra support to develop their knowledge and confidence in specified areas of Maths.
We intend that all children will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately; in line with our Maths Mastery approach to the teaching of Mathematics. In order to support this fully, Lark Rise Academy follow the Concrete - Pictorial - Abstract (CPA) approach in the teaching of Maths. We ask children to explain, reason, prove and explore number and we encourage them to share their understanding with others. This approach, coupled with enabling children with the confidence and clear accurate use of mathematical vocabulary empowers the children to deepen their understanding and develop true mastery within the subject.
Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.

White Rose Maths
At Lark Rise Academy we follow the White Rose Maths Calculation Policy for Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. The policies make clear the progressive approach in the teaching of calculation, along with clear information on the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach and related representations for each year group.
