Design Technology Intent
"Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you look deeper, it's really how it works."
"Technology makes possibilities. Design makes solutions."
At Lark Rise Academy we believe that Design and Technology provides children with the skills and understanding needed to live in our rapidly changing world; we recognise how important it is in helping children learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, enterprising and capable citizens.
We want the children at Lark Rise Academy to develop their imagination, their critical thinking and their understanding of the world around them through their love of Design and Technology. We aim for our children to question and think innovatively in order to design and develop their own products with a purpose in mind. Design and Technology encourages children to become independent, creative problem solvers both as individuals and as members of a team.
We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Our Design and Technology curriculum provides children with opportunities to research, represent their ideas, explore and investigate, develop their ideas, make a product and evaluate their work. Children will be exposed to a wide range of media including textiles, food and woodwork; through this, children will develop their skills, vocabulary and resilience.
Children are given regular opportunities to develop their understanding of the technological world. We will evaluate past and present design and technology and the ways that these have influenced modern society. This will allow our children to have a more critical approach to their own designs and creations.
Design and Technology requires children to draw on skills learnt within Mathematics, Art, Science and Computing. Children will deepen their understanding and independence within all of these subject areas during their Design and Technology lessons.
